I work for Kroger Manaufacturing and I lead the 5s project for our production plant here in Texas. The office is the hardest to manage for us due to most here work endless hours and manage multiple projects at a time. Our scores for the office or not terribly low but its hard mandating the amount of objects at your desk and I refuse to NOT allow folks to keep family portraits and reference material including (bible) exposeda as long as they are squared away and it leaves a fair amount of working surface. I was hoping to find some examples of this and not photo's with 3 things on a desk which is never going to work in my experience unless folks know when the audit police are on the prowl; 2nd year running for us here and the office is the hardest to agree on for associates. All other aspects of 5s work well promoting a high performance work environment and shows well for our multiple audits each year. Any input on auditing the office and guide lines with direction of what should be looked at and considered would be a great help. An empty desk is not possible.

[...] I see a clear parallel between this ritual and the process of 5S in a manufacturing environment. You can’t engage in a thorough 5S program without looking at every physical item and determining its purpose and value. The same is true with the information you manage. [...]

Dan,

Great article here. I knew I had to read this as soon as I saw the picture!

I've seen things like this before, it seems that people don't know how much "organization" they might need, until they go too far.

For me, it's kinda like sports...I never knew that riding two days, 120-plus miles each day, was too much...until I did it!

I apply that same idea to organization. Go ahead, over-organize, and then come back to use "just what you need."

I think keeping your desk organized is very helpful. It is not so much the placement of your computer, mouse, etc., although this does help, the paperwork and organization that is going on inside the computer is the most important element for not wasting time for me.http://www.massachucetts-water-damage-restoration.info/
